Village History

Village History

Founded in 1817 by Colonel William Clark, Clarksburg developed along Urbana Pike (State Route 207) in the rich farmland of Deerfield Township. The village was established after Colonel Clark returned from service in the War of 1812 and laid out the original village lots that became the foundation of the community.

From its earliest days, Clarksburg has been a close‑knit and patriotic community. Residents have served in every major American conflict from the War of 1812 through modern times. The village’s agricultural roots and strong sense of community continue to shape its character today.

Education and community life have always been central to Clarksburg. The first school was built in 1821, and the area later became home to Clarksburg High School. Community traditions such as Field Day and the annual Halloween Carnival helped bring generations of residents together and remain an important part of local heritage.

By the late 19th century. Clarksburg had grown into a small commercial center serving Deerfield Township. Today, the village remains proud of its history while continuing to serve as a welcoming rural community in Ross County.

Clarksburg is also known as the hometown of Olympic gold medalist Cindy Noble and for the athletic achievements of Adena High School such as six State Championships and two runners-up. The village continues to honor its heritage while working toward a strong future for its residents.
